Laval Chooses Jakarto for Its Tree and Canopy Inventory

Laval, the third-largest city in Quebec province with over 436,000 residents, is taking a proactive approach to managing its urban forest. Spanning 246.8 km² with a road network of 1,800 km, the city is leveraging cutting-edge technology to ensure precise and efficient monitoring of its vegetation.

To achieve this goal, Laval has entrusted Jakarto with the creation of a detailed inventory of both public and private trees visible from the street, as well as the city’s urban canopy.

This ambitious project is powered by advanced mobile mapping technology and automated geospatial data processing.

🌿 A Large-Scale Project: Mapping Laval’s Vegetation

Jakarto will digitize the entire Laval territory, using its mobile mapping units, capturing nearly 7 terabytes of data with unparalleled accuracy.

The goal is to create a detailed picture of trees and the urban canopy to:

Inventory trees (location, height, trunk diameter, and crown area)
Map the canopy and analyze its coverage across the city
Generate vegetation indices to identify optimal tree planting areas
Integrate data with the city's systems using geospatial queries

These datasets will be delivered in ESRI File Geodatabase (.gdb) format with a spatial accuracy of less than 10 cm.

🛰️ Technologies Used

Jakarto deploys a cutting-edge technology ecosystem to capture, analyze, and deliver data with maximum speed and precision.

📡 Data Collection

Custom-developed mobile mapping units, equipped with:

  • High-precision LiDAR
  • 360° cameras
  • High-accuracy GPS
  • Inertial navigation system and odometer

Continuous data acquisition without the need for geodetic points
Highly precise positioning (< 5 cm in 90% of cases)

🌎 Why This Inventory Is Strategic for Laval?

Thanks to Jakarto’s high-precision data, Laval will be able to:

🌳 Optimize urban forest management
📊 Track canopy evolution and identify urban heat islands
🛠️ Plan new tree planting effectively while avoiding infrastructure conflicts
🔍 Enhance climate resilience and improve residents' quality of life

With this initiative, Laval is demonstrating a strong commitment to integrating innovation into its environmental and urban planning policies.

Jakarto is proud to contribute to this vision for a greener and more sustainable city!
